Rain Facts

If you’re new to my coloring pages, you should know that I like to give you the option of learning about the subject so that you can easily turn it into an educational lesson while you are at it…so here we go!

Here are some fun and interesting, simplified, facts about rain, (here is a link to my reference source):

  • Rain is a form of precipitation that occurs when water droplets in the atmosphere condense and fall to the Earth’s surface.
  • Raindrops are not actually tear-shaped. They are typically spherical or oval, with larger drops becoming more flattened at the bottom due to air resistance.
  • The sound of raindrops hitting surfaces is called “petrichor,” a term derived from Greek words meaning “stone” and “the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods.” It’s often associated with a pleasant and earthy aroma.
  • The average raindrop falls at a speed of about 8 meters per second (about 17.4 miles per hour) during a typical rainstorm.
  • Rainfall is not evenly distributed across the Earth. The wettest place on Earth is Mawsynram, India, which receives an average annual rainfall of around 11,871 millimeters (467.4 inches).
  • Rainwater is not pure. As it falls through the atmosphere, it collects dust, pollen, and other particles, making it slightly acidic with a pH of around 5.6.
  • The largest raindrop ever recorded had a diameter of about 8.8 millimeters (0.35 inches) and was discovered in Brazil in 2004.
  • Rain can take various forms, including drizzle, mist, showers, and downpours, depending on the size and intensity of the water droplets.
  • Rain plays a vital role in the water cycle, replenishing lakes, rivers, and groundwater reserves. It also helps to irrigate crops and sustains ecosystems worldwide.
  • Rainfall patterns are influenced by factors such as prevailing winds, temperature, geography, and the presence of mountains or bodies of water.
  • The study of rain and other forms of precipitation is called pluviology.
  • Rain can have significant cultural and symbolic meanings across different societies and religions, representing purification, renewal, fertility, or even melancholy.
  • Some regions experience a specific type of rain called “monsoon,” characterized by seasonal winds that bring heavy rains during a particular time of the year.
  • The term “rain gauge” refers to a device used to measure the amount of rainfall in a specific area over a given period of time.
  • Rainfall intensity is measured in millimeters or inches per hour. A “rainfall rate” of one millimeter per hour is roughly equivalent to a light drizzle, while rates above 10 millimeters per hour are considered heavy rainfall.

*It's worth mentioning that this website employs an image optimizer for the sample illustrations. This optimization improves loading speed, albeit with a slight reduction in quality. For optimal results, we recommend downloading and directly utilizing the PDF file. The sample image serves to provide a general visual preview, as navigating through an entire PDF might present challenges on certain devices, potentially hindering the ability to view the complete image in a single screenshot.

**Guidelines for achieving the finest print quality are primarily tailored to iPhone users with an HP printer, although they should be similarly applicable to other devices.

***Whenever feasible, opt for the "fit to page" setting before printing to ensure the entire image is encompassed within your printed coloring page.

Tips for coloring

When it comes to coloring pictures of rain, clouds, and raindrops, here are some of my best tips and tricks to enhance your coloring experience and bring your rainy artwork to life:

  • Choose a Cool Toned Color Palette: Rainy scenes often feature cool and muted colors. Opt for shades of blue, gray, and purple to create a sense of calm and dampness. These colors also help convey the mood of rainy weather.
  • Use Gradient Techniques: Rain creates interesting gradients due to the way light interacts with water droplets. Apply gentle gradients to your sky, with darker shades near the top and lighter shades closer to the horizon. This can add depth and realism to your artwork.
  • Embrace Reflections: Puddles and wet surfaces offer great opportunities to depict reflections. Add a bit of shine to your puddles with slight highlights of white or light blue to suggest the reflection of light.
  • Layer Transparency for Depth: To simulate the look of raindrops in the foreground and background, use layers with varying levels of transparency. This can create the illusion of rain falling at different distances from the viewer.
  • Play with Composition: Consider the overall composition of your artwork. Rainy scenes often involve elements like umbrellas, wet streets, and misty backgrounds. Place these elements strategically to create a sense of depth and intrigue.
  • Focus on Textures: Texture is essential when depicting rainy scenes. Use brushes that emulate the look of raindrops on glass or wet surfaces. Adding texture to the pavement or windows can make your artwork more realistic and engaging.
  • Add Atmosphere with Fog and Mist: Rainy weather often brings along fog and mist. Use soft brush strokes and pale colors to create a misty atmosphere. This can give your artwork a dreamy and atmospheric quality.
  • Highlight the Source of Light: Make sure you highlight the source of light in your rainy scene. Use warm colors like yellows or oranges to contrast with the cool tones of the rain.
  • Depict Motion and Action: Capture the feeling of rain in motion by slightly tilting the raindrops and adding diagonal lines to suggest falling water. You can also show characters walking briskly under umbrellas or rain blowing sideways in the wind.
  • Experiment with Raindrop Details: For raindrops on surfaces, consider adding individual details to some of them. Vary the size and shape of raindrops to create a more realistic look.
  • Use Negative Space: Don’t be afraid of empty spaces in your rainy scene. Negative space can enhance the feeling of rain falling and create a sense of serenity.
  • Study Real References: Look at real photographs of rainy scenes to observe how light interacts with raindrops, how shadows form, and how reflections work. This can provide valuable insights into creating a convincing rainy atmosphere.

Remember, the key to creating a captivating rain-themed artwork lies in capturing the mood, atmosphere, and details of rainy weather.

Don’t be afraid to experiment and add your artistic touch to make the scene truly unique.

FAQ’s

Are there different colors of rain?

Yes, there are instances where rain can exhibit different colors. Here are a few examples:

Red Rain: In rare cases, rain can appear red or pink. This phenomenon is usually caused by the presence of dust or sand particles from desert regions or volcanic ash in the atmosphere. When these particles mix with rainwater, they can tint the rain with a reddish hue.

Yellow Rain: Yellow-colored rain can occur due to pollen or certain types of organic matter, such as spores or algae, being suspended in the air and mixing with rainwater. This is more commonly seen during spring when plants release large amounts of pollen.

Green Rain: Green-colored rain can sometimes be observed during thunderstorms. It occurs when strong winds lift large amounts of dust or debris from the ground, such as from fields or forests, and these particles mix with rainwater, creating a greenish tint.

Black Rain: Black rain is a term used to describe rainfall that contains high levels of pollution or soot particles, typically resulting from industrial activities or wildfires. This type of rain can have a dark or murky appearance.

It’s important to note that these instances of colored rain are relatively rare and usually occur under specific conditions or in localized areas.

The majority of rainfalls are transparent or appear as shades of gray.
