About this recipe

I fell in love with a garlic and basil bread machine recipe for a flavored pizza dough in the early 2000’s, and it was actually the base recipe for this version (I have tweaked the original recipe like crazy over the years) that I am sharing with you all today.

I wanted to link that other recipe for you guys so that you could check it out too, but the website that I got it from is now non-existent unfortunately.

Oh well, I tried I guess…I’m not going to bore you all with some lengthy article… let’s just get right on to my families’ favorite seasoned pizza dough recipe.

Garlic Herb Pizza Dough Recipe

Yield: 16 Servings
Prep Time: 50 minutes
Cook Time: 18 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour 8 minutes

This versatile dough recipe is perfect for pizza crust, calzone dough, cheese bread, bread bowls, or for an herbed French bread.

Ingredients

  • 3 Cups Warm Water
  • 2-3 Tablespoons Sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons Instant Yeast
  • 1/4 Cup + 2 Tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 2 & 1/2 Teaspoons Salt
  • 1-2 Tablespoons Italian Seasoning
  • 1-2 Tablespoons Minced Garlic
  • 3/4 Cup Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • 6-7 Cups Flour
  • (cooking oil as needed)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl (at least 4 quarts in size), combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Allow yeast to activate for approximately 15 minutes (will look bubbly if it worked properly).
  2. Then add the extra virgin olive oil, salt, Italian seasoning, minced garlic, and parmesan cheese. Mix well.
  3. Add the flour slowly, mixing it in cup by cup, and keep kneading it until it is a wonderful dough consistency (amount of flour will vary, so watch it). Make sure to grease your hands if you need to knead by hand.
  4. Add a little bit of cooking oil to the bowl and grease the edges/up the sides. Push dough down into the bottom of the bowl and then place the "pretty" side up. Add a little extra oil around the bowl or on top of dough as needed.
  5. Cover dough and place in a warm place to rise for approximately 30-45 minutes. Allow to double in size.
  6. Grease hands and then punch it down, make sure to punch out any air bubbles.
  7. Then use as your dough for whatever you are making. If using for bread bowls or French bread, you will want to let it rise again, once the dough is shaped, before baking.

Notes

*This recipe makes enough dough for two deep dish pizza's in a 15" skillet with some extra.

**I typically make this using 1 Tablespoon of Italian Seasoning and 1 Tablespoon of Garlic, but you can easily adjust the amounts to suit your tastes.

***You can make this ahead of time, cover tightly, and refrigerate until you are ready to make your baked goods.

I personally like this recipe so much that I really don’t even try to make any other type of dough when making our own home-made pizza’s or calzones or whatever we may be in the mood for…but the true test is to see if you like it that much too.

If you love it, please make sure to leave me a star review with comments!

If in an air-tight container, I recommend not storing this in the refrigerator for more than three days prior to use.
