If you don’t have vinyl windows and aren’t planning on replacing them anytime soon, you need to invest in some thermal drapes. (If you’re in a house you plan on staying in you do need to upgrade to vinyl windows. They’re not only energy efficient, but they also block out a lot of outside noise.)Thermal drapes can make a difference of up to 10 degree’s F in a room. This equates to saving drastic amounts of money in heating and cooling. If you’re going to buy some do not get the ones from Big Lots or the cheapest ones from a Walmart. Believe me, I’ve tried them and you’re getting what you paid for by cheaping out. I bought some of these thermal drapes at Target and they are wonderful. Before we had them, in the winter it was too cold to sit anywhere near the windows in our living room but now it feels like the rest of the room. The lower power bill has been nice too. Make sure to check user reviews before you buy some, it’ll be worth the extra effort. Also if you’re interested in making some yourself here are a couple helpful resources: How to make your own thermal drapes or how to make thermal curtains.
