How To Take Hemp Seed Oil Orally (video)

Ingesting hemp seed oil daily is one of the better additions I have made to my health-minded lifestyle routine, however it does take some getting used to if you’re not a fan of drinking oil (and most likely gagging it down). Luckily, I have a “how to” handy tip on how to make it much more bearable to take hemp seed orally, as well as I go over what hemp seed oil even is and why I take it in the first place.

What is hemp seed oil and why should you take it?

What is hemp seed oil good for? What does hemp seed oil do? You may be wondering variations of both of those questions and the long and short of it is that hemp seed oil is an oil made from pressing seeds from the hemp plant, and it contains healthy fatty acids as well as other beneficial nutrients.

Our bodies in general need a daily dose of healthy fatty acids in order to work properly (to become the well-oiled machine that they can be if we are taking proper care of ourselves). The particular healthy fatty acids found in hemp seed oil are Omega-3 and Omega-6.

I do not claim to be an expert on the benefits of hemp seed oil, so I strongly suggest you follow this link over to Webmd and read for yourself what they say on the topic of hemp seed oil benefits and the nutrients it has in it.

For me, not only did I want the benefits of the fatty acids found in hemp seed oil, but hemp seed oil is also touted for healthy hair, skin, nails, inflammation reduction, it promotes heart health, reduces anxiety, and lowers blood pressure…these are all benefits that I both wanted and needed so for me it was a no-brainer that I should at least try it, and see if I felt like it added value to my life.

And here we are, weeks later, I like the benefits so much (so far it has reduced my pain…yep, I take hemp seed oil for pain, it has reduced my anxiety levels…yep, I take hemp seed oil for anxiety, and it has even reduced my sugar cravings drastically). It has helped me so much that I felt it was necessary to write it an Ode…lol. Only kidding, but I wouldn’t be living up to my personal mantra in helping others in any way that I can, if I didn’t share my personal positive experience with hemp seed oil supplementation.

How long does it take hemp seed oil to work?

I have been struggling with chronic pain from a back injury that I got shortly after giving birth to my youngest child (in 2015). Sometimes the pain and inflammation have been so bad that I couldn’t even walk, and it was forcing me to sometimes take NSAIDS around the clock to even be able to function…or I would have to get even heavier stuff from the Doctor, which is a route I absolutely hate taking.

I know that it’s really not good for ones kidneys to be constantly filtering those NSAIDS through my system (as well as it’s hard on other organs in the body), so I decided that I needed to find a way to stop taking so many NSAIDS and hopefully heal my back in the process.

The main reason that I started taking hemp seed oil was because I had done a fair amount of research, and it sounded like it would be a great natural way to reduce inflammation in my whole body… yes, I take hemp seed oil for inflammation control.

I was shocked to find that I noticed within the first three days of taking hemp seed oil orally, that my back pain was almost completely gone. I didn’t have to reach for a single pain killer after that…and that is saying a lot since I am so physically active that I average about 20,000 steps per day which can cause a lot of inflammation (that is roughly ten miles of movement per day, for those of you that don’t count steps).

It’s still too soon to tell you what the long term benefits of using hemp seed oil are for me personally, but I will say that my back feels so good that I have been entertaining hopes of being able to run again, something that I have been told by multiple healthcare professionals that I will never be able to do again because it can be too jarring for my old back injury. I will try to remember to update this post once I have been using it for a full year, but so far, I am in LOVE with it so much that I plan on taking hemp seed oil daily for life.

How much hemp seed oil should you take a day?

From what I have read, to use Hemp Seed Oil for its health benefits, you should ingest one to three Tablespoons per day (that is 15-45 ml’s). Here is a great resource if you would like to read more on how much you should be taking.

I find that I get a sour stomach if I take more than one Tablespoon (15 ml’s) a day though, so I strongly suggest that you start with the smallest daily dosage.

Then after a while, if you feel that it is necessary, or have discussed it with your healthcare provider and deemed it a good fit for you, then possibly up your intake gradually over several days until you are at the maximum suggested dosage of Three Tablespoons (45 ml’s) daily… but personal opinion here, I don’t think anyone needs more than that.

How do you use hemp oil orally?

You can easily just swallow your daily dose of hemp seed oil, or use it as a base oil in your salad dressing recipes…but I do not recommend taking it that way at all…unless you enjoy things that taste gross…lol.

The first time that I tried drinking my hemp seed oil straight I almost threw up…not joking, it slimily slid down my throat, and my cheek, and the flavor is not the best so I was gagging the whole time… it was a pretty bad experience. TMI here, but that wasn’t even the worst part, the worst part was actually later in the day when I burped and it had the greasy aftertaste of the hemp seed oil. It almost ruined my whole day it was so gross!

I honestly wondered if I was even going to be able to stomach supplementing with hemp seed oil ever again, or if it was even going to be worth the effort of trying to gag it down every single day… so as this problem-solving mind of mine always does… my mind started churning out possible solutions for the problem.

The solution I landed on surprised me a bit (the solution on how to use hemp seed oil in a non-gag-inducing way), but I was willing to give anything a try at this point so I tried mixing the hemp seed oil with my daily collagen powder before I mixed in the water for my collagen... and what do you know…the collagen powder absorbed it all and even when it got mixed with water it still bonded to the majority of the the oil. Even if I let it sit for a minute before I drink it the oil stays pretty well mixed in…I do suggest stirring it right before you drink it if you did let it sit for a little while though.

So, if you already take a daily dose of collagen, I strongly recommend that you try mixing it with your hemp seed oil first, and then adding a bit of look-warm water to it,(mix it well) before swallowing it.

I mix 20g of Collagen, plus 1 Tablespoon of Hemp Seed Oil, then mix in about 1/2 Cup of warm water…and chug it fast.

Somehow, it stays bonded well enough to the collagen that it doesn’t give you the same experience as swallowing straight oil…and the best part is that there are no greasy after-taste burps later in the day either!

If you’re not already taking a collagen supplement… you totally need to look into collagen supplementation (here is a good resource on the healthy benefits of collagen).

I started taking collagen daily, at around age 35, at the beginning of my weight loss journey (I have lost and maintained over 100 lbs) and I have minimal loose skin hanging off of me, even after having four babies…new people I meet are always commenting on how I don’t look like I am as old as I am, or that I have lost an extreme amount of weight. Collagen is one of the keys to the puzzle of not having loose skin.

I will write more about my fit skin routine later, so make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss it when I do…but for now, you just need to trust me that as we age, collagen supplementation is a good thing to try because our bodies produce less and less of it as the years go on.

Collagen can be a little expensive, but I find it’s fairly inexpensive to get this kind, the kind I use and LOVE at Costco so it’s actually pretty affordable. If you don’t have a Costco near you, I suggest trying this kind on Amazon, it’s the one I use when I can’t make the long drive to my nearest Costco.

Here is a cheesy little video that I made to show you how easy it is to mix the hemp seed oil with the collagen. Please make sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel while you’re at it, Thanks!

Where Can You Buy Hemp Seed Oil & How To Save Money On It

Sure, I could give you a link to some sub-par place to get some crappy hemp seed oil on the cheap…but this is one of those items that I actually strongly recommend that you buy locally at your own health food store if you can because hemp seed oil requires refrigeration, and I just don’t trust a lot of companies to make sure it stayed at the right temperature like it was supposed to, so either get it from the grocery store, straight from the source, or from Amazon here.

My best suggestion, is that you either ask around to find out where you can get the best quality but cheapest hemp seed oil in your area…or you could do a little research yourself checking the natural grocery stores (community Facebook groups are a great place to ask this kind of question).

Once you know the cheapest and best place to get your hemp seed oil locally, I suggest buying a small bottle to see if you like it, and then if you decide that it is something you would like to stick to as a permanent supplement to add to your daily healthy regimen.

Then, if you love it as much as I do, it’s a good idea to check the price per ounce and buy hemp seed oil bulk to save the most money.

In case you’re wondering which type I use, I use Nutiva Organic Cold Pressed Hemp Seed Oil. I LOVE Nutiva brand everything…they always put out a good product, and no, no one is paying me to tell you that, it’s just my honest opinion.

So, like I said…hemp seed oil has been wonderful for me… yes, it took a little bit of getting used to it and yeah, that learning curve was more than a little bit nasty…but I hope that by sharing this today, it will make your experience with taking hemp seed oil orally a much better experience. It needs to be a better experience so that it will be easier to stick with it, and you too can enjoy some of the great health benefits it provides.
