New years facts

For those who are new to my coloring pages, it’s important to note that I enjoy providing the opportunity to delve into the subject matter.

This way, you can seamlessly transform your coloring activity into an educational lesson.

So, let’s embark on this journey together!

Here are lots of fun and interesting, simplified, facts about all things New Years and the tradition of celebrating it:

  • Global Celebrations: New Year’s is celebrated by different cultures around the world, often with unique traditions and customs that vary from country to country.
  • Times Square Ball Drop: The iconic Times Square Ball Drop in New York City has been a tradition since 1907, where a glittering ball descends as the clock strikes midnight.
  • Fireworks Extravaganza: Fireworks are a common way to ring in the New Year, symbolizing the idea of lighting up the sky for a fresh start.
  • First-Footing: In Scotland and some other parts of the UK, the first person to enter a home after midnight is believed to bring good luck for the year and is called the “first-footer.”
  • Lunar New Year: Celebrated in many Asian countries, the Lunar New Year follows the cycles of the moon and often involves parades, dragon dances, and feasting.
  • 12 Grapes Tradition: In Spain and some Latin American countries, people eat 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight, each grape representing a wish for each month of the coming year.
  • New Year’s Resolutions: Making resolutions for self-improvement in the upcoming year is a popular tradition, even though the success rate varies.
  • Noisemakers and Bells: Making noise at midnight is believed to scare away evil spirits, which is why fireworks, bells, and noisemakers are common on New Year’s Eve ( I have a tutorial for some easy and cheap noise makers, here if you would like to check that out).
  • Colored Underwear: In some Latin American countries, wearing specific colors of underwear on New Year’s Eve is believed to bring luck and success. Red signifies love, while yellow represents wealth.
  • Polar Bear Plunge: In some places, like Canada and the United States, people take part in the “Polar Bear Plunge,” where they jump into cold bodies of water on New Year’s Day as a refreshing and invigorating start to the year.
  • Burning Effigies: In some countries, effigies or representations of disliked public figures or events from the past year are burned as a symbolic way of leaving negativity behind.
  • Cleaning and Decluttering: In many cultures, cleaning the house before New Year’s is a way to sweep away bad luck and welcome positive energy for the upcoming year.
  • Lucky Foods: Certain foods are considered lucky to eat on New Year’s, such as round fruits (representing coins) and long noodles (representing longevity) in Filipino and Chinese traditions.
  • Family and Friends: New Year’s is often a time for gathering with loved ones, sharing meals, and celebrating together.
  • Different New Year Dates: Not all cultures celebrate New Year’s on January 1st. For example, the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah) falls in September or October, and the Islamic New Year (Hijri New Year) varies based on the Islamic calendar.

These fascinating traditions and customs showcase the diverse ways in which people around the world come together to welcome a new chapter in their lives each year.

Coloring tips

Here are some tips and tricks to enhance your coloring experience when working on New Year-themed pictures:

  • Color Palette Selection: Choose a color palette that resonates with the festive spirit of New Year’s, such as gold, silver, deep blues, and vibrant purples. Incorporate traditional colors associated with celebrations and fireworks.
  • Metallic Accents: Use metallic markers, gel pens, or colored pencils to add shimmer and sparkle to your coloring pages. This can mimic the glitz and glamour often associated with New Year’s festivities.
  • Contrast and Depth: Experiment with contrasts between light and dark shades to create depth and dimension in your coloring. This can make your designs pop off the page.
  • Highlighting Countdown: If your coloring page features a clock or countdown element, consider using brighter colors or shading techniques to emphasize the passage of time as the clock strikes midnight.
  • Firework Explosions: For firework designs, blend vibrant colors to depict the burst of colors in the sky. Adding small dots or flicks around the firework center can create a dazzling effect.
  • Glitter and Texture: Use glitter pens or glue with fine glitter to add texture and a festive touch to specific elements on your coloring page, such as stars or confetti.
  • Incorporate Symbols: Include symbols of luck and prosperity associated with New Year’s, like four-leaf clovers, horseshoes, or lucky coins. Color them with intention to symbolize positive wishes for the coming year.
  • Layering Techniques: Experiment with layering different colors or using blending tools to achieve gradients and smooth transitions, adding depth and richness to your coloring.
  • White Gel Pen Highlights: To create highlights and enhance details, use a white gel pen to add small dots or lines on areas that catch light, such as bubbles in a champagne glass or glimmers on party decorations.
  • Background Effects: Consider adding a background wash of color using watercolors or markers to set the mood of the New Year’s scene, whether it’s a starry night or a bustling cityscape.
  • Personal Touches: Customize your coloring pages with your own personal touches, such as adding the year, a meaningful quote, or the name of a cherished memory from the past year.
  • Mindful Coloring: Embrace the meditative aspect of coloring by focusing on each stroke and staying present in the moment. It’s a great way to reflect on the year that’s passed and set intentions for the year ahead.

Remember, the goal is to have fun and express yourself creatively.

Let your imagination run wild and explore different techniques that resonate with your style and the essence of New Year’s celebrations.
